This is a whole-class spreadsheet activity which uses the ‘hide and reveal' technique to explore the interpretation of scatter graphs. Pupils are encouraged to write explanations of the relationships shown.
Year 9 Objectives covered:
- Interpret graphs and diagrams and make inferences to support or cast doubt on initial conjectures
- Have a basic understanding of correlation
The spreadsheet includes 10 scatter diagrams which can be displayed one at a time to the whole class. Pupils then:
- describe the type of correlation
- interpret the correlation in terms of the data
- add a line of best fit
This activity can be used to introduce or reinforce correlation and to help develop pupils’ writing skills in mathematics.
