In this activity, pupils use route-planning websites, satellite images and mapping software to develop an accurate estimate of journey time. The open-ended nature of the task allows pupils to approach it at their own level. There is the opportunity to work towards many of the ‘Using and Applying Mathematics’ assessment criteria from level 2 to level 8.
This investigation will help your pupils to:
- Understand and carry out calculations using time, distance and speed
- Read and interpret information in a wide variety of forms
- Make more accurate estimates
- Use a range of web based tools to support their mathematics in a real-life context
- Work as part of a team to develop strategies to solve a complex problem
The investigation is suitable for pupils across a wide range of levels across Key Stages 3 and 4.
