Investigating Sequences
This is a spreadsheet-based activity, where a linear expression is entered and the software displays the sequence it generates. The expression, the sequence and the position numbers can be displayed or hidden allowing teachers to ask pupils a variety of probing questions.

Year 8 Objectives covered:
  • Use linear expressions to describe the nth term of a simple arithmetic sequence
Year 9 Objective:
  • Generate terms of a sequence using position-to-term rules using ICT
Using ICT to generate sequences encourages a lively pace and progression through the lesson. The ‘mechanics’ of the sequence are taken care of and so you and the pupils can concentrate on the mathematics. There are some ‘probing questions’ in the resource materials that you may find helpful when planning your lesson using this software.
