This is a whole-class activity that will help you to teach concepts of ordering decimals and how multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100 affects numbers. The resources works well on interactive whiteboards but is also effective using a screen and a data projector.
The activity is designed for year 7 groups but might be useful (for example as a starter) for other year groups.
Objectives covered include:
- Understand and use decimal notation and place value; multiply and divide integers and decimals by 10, 100, 1000, and explain the effect.
- Compare and order decimals in different contexts; know that when comparing measurements the units must be the same.
The activity is designed as a whole-group activity that will encourage discussion and help to draw out misconceptions and provides opportunities for pupils to describe their mathematical thinking out loud.
